Interior walls... it's beginning to look like a house!

This week we got some interior walls... well all of them actually.

The framers came on Sunday and put down the sub floor... you would think after having the roof and walls ripped off everything else would be quieter... Nope, they just really like to make noise! Jaxson and I came home from Long Island on Sunday to Brian and a petrified Cooper outside in the sweltering head because it sounded like the framer was dropping a ton of bricks every time he put a piece of OSB down!

Interior walls went up between Monday and Wednesday ... there's been a lull in work since. 1st floor windows should start being installed on Monday, the mason should be out to extend the chimney and I think HVAC is coming back out this week to rough in his lines.

It's much easier to start visualizing things with walls though!

Jaxson's room and the spare room are much larger then the pictures show... I have to get the real camera out for the interior pictures, the iPhone just doesn't cut it.

Windows and a roof

So after a missing crew on Tuesday I came home Wednesday to the upstairs windows being delivered and the framers working on blocking... doesn't seem like a lot but apparently it's going to stop the floor from bouncing so I guess it's important

Yesterday the progress was much more impressive! The roof was just about done and all but two windows were installed!

It's starting to look like a house! Not just a box on top of my house!

We went on vacation and came back to....

So last Tuesday was pretty discouraging... there was the whole big hole in the kitchen ceiling, everything was just a dusty dirty mess, construction was taking a toll on us already!

Wednesday we had off, we were heading to Wildwood NJ on Thursday to crash Amelia's family vacation! It was much needed. We woke up a little later then usual on Wednesday and while Jaxson and I were lounging in bed there was a lot of noise, Brian came up from the basement to see that a LVL had fallen through the living room ceiling.... it was clearly dropped from a decent height as it made a perfect impression through the ceiling.... Jaxson's nebulizer broke the fall... by divine intervention we were having a lazy morning, otherwise we would have been sitting pretty darn close to where the beam fell... we left the house and stayed out most of the day because clearly the framers didn't give a crap about being careful, no it was pretty funny to them. Came home to a downpour and water coming in the house at multiple spots, including flooding the basement because the tarp on the back of the house was just guiding the water to the foundation... after a few phone calls to the G.C. the framers figured something out and we got the place dried out.

Thursday we woke up loaded the car and left, dropped Cooper off at Canine Valley with his Aunt Sharon for the weekend and then met the G.C. John back at the house quick before we left... we made it pretty known that we weren't happy, and it was obvious he wasn't too happy either... the framers decided they weren't going to work because of the chance of rain... So off to vacation we went with the expectation to come home to a house that was ready for roofing.

We had a great time on vacation! Jaxson was quite the fish spending his days in the pool, he even put his feet in the ocean... not a huge fan of sand but he got plenty sandy!

We came home Sunday to a somewhat impressive sight... the shell was up, and tar paper was on the roof, but most of the windows were cut out, leaving the house exposed to any weather....

Roofing was delivered Monday with the expectation that they would start roofing... Some nasty storms rolled in around 3 and it seemed like they packed up and left shortly after that. The roofing is on the roof, but in bundles, nothing was started. Brian called the G.C. again because they were calling for more weather and we needed to have the window openings covered... the framers begrudgingly came out secured all the windows and cleaned up after themselves a little... John must have gotten on them about that too... my favorite thing they do is throw empty toilet paper rolls behind the toilet instead of taking it outside to the garbage?!?!?!

It's Tuesday again, and it's gorgeous out, the humidity dropped there is a breeze and there is NO work being done and no one knows why... the G.C. has tried calling them and gotten no answer.... it's very discouraging, we have 6 months to complete this project (5 now, since we closed in June) and Brian is doing all the finish work, so he needs time to do this and for every three steps forward there is a stop work because someone's upset.... I just want to tell these guys to grow a set and get over it! This isn't a vacant home, we're living here, you have to make it weather tight every single night! I know we're only 2 weeks in but I feel like we should be much farther along.

the roofing delivery destroyed our retaining wall by the street.... :o(

the stupid machine the framers have been using destroyed our front yard too.... :o(

What a way to start the week

Typically when someone sends you a text "can you call me" it's never good! If it was good they would just call you right?? Yesterday started with a "can you call me" text from Brian... someone stepped through the ceiling in the kitchen... the ceiling that wasn't supposed to be replaced...

...... too bad there will be a room above the kitchen, or else we'd go with a sky light, I love what it does for the room....

Much to my pleasant surprise there was some decent progress by the time I got home.... We had one wall up and by the time the crew left for the day there were two

 that will be our room

The framers were there when I left today, and the electrician is coming back to hopefully get all of the overhead lights in the house back up and working... hoping that all four walls are up by the end of the day and they can get it pretty weather proof for the night... they're calling for rain tomorrow again.... ugh!

Day 3 ... weekend 1

So no pictures this post... should have taken one of the house with the blue tarp roof but day 3 was a little stressful and weekend 1 there was no progress.

Brian came home to the tarp not really secured and rain... so he scrambled up on the roof to secure it. John came immediately after Brian called him and together they got us water proof. As proven by Saturday's all day storms!

Sunday was beautiful and the framers were supposed to work, but one of them "fell ill" and there was a beautiful day wasted.

Day 4 there's some progress, I've gotten Brian's daily pictures but it's 4:30 and I'm not feeling posting pictures, so I'll take more when I get home and post the progress tomorrow.... including the new "skylight" in the kitchen... yep, someone fell through the ceiling....

Demo Day 2....

Well day 1 went surprisingly smooth, one min there was a roof the next there was not! Day 2, not so much... I don't know what I expected, perhaps to come home to a wall or two? Unreasonable I'm sure but you try living in a house with the roof ripped off with a one year old and a dog who is scared out of his mind, you would expect a wall or two too!

But we don't have any walls up, or ceiling lights on the first floor currently... leave it to the previous owners to have weird wiring running everywhere... Our cute little cape looks like a sad little rancher, we had our first official renovation fight , but eye on the prize... it will all be worth it in the end!

oh hello outside, right behind that THIN piece of plastic protecting me from the elements AND wild life!

The whole second floor is gone now!

it's like walking up the stairs to a rooftop deck... except there's nothing to stand on besides these joists.... hope no one falls through any!

standing in the future bathroom and our walk in closet space

is this OSHA approved? I think that was so no one fell down the stairs.

The house was tarped last night and due to the impending rain the next two days doesn't look like much will be happening until Monday.... I'm looking forward to going to the Shore next week, hoping that when we return there are some major moves made! Perhaps a wall or two??

9 years of love

199 ... the little cape we fell in love with and made our home 9 years ago. We got engaged in this house, planned a wedding in this house, cried tears of joy, tears of sadness, walked through it's empty rooms when we lost Hunter, puppy proofed it when we got Cooper (not very well I might add), and brought our son home to his house, baby proofed it (again, not very well).... and what do we do to repay it??

We pay some people to come over and rip it apart!!! Demo officially kicked off on July 6th 2016! After years of planning (and hoping & praying) and 6 months of loan nonsense our dream of adding a full second floor was finally becoming a reality! When all is said and done we will have 3 bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs. This blog will be our way of remember all of the emotions surrounding the project.... current emotion is scared sh*tless!

View from the neighbors and the door to Narnia! (Thanks Liz for the sneak peak of what I was coming home to!)
there used to be a roof there!!

Here are some pictures leading up to demo day:

Stay tuned for more updates!
